Scheduled transit ensures international passage remains open.
The entrance to the Persian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz, is a major bottleneck along the international oil trade route. In a scheduled training operation, the U.S. Navy sent the USS Nimitz aircraft carrier and its flotilla of ships past the strait into the Persian Gulf this past week. The ships passed through safely, though Iranian news sources say the Revolutionary Guard flew surveillance drones over the U.S. carrier.
As tensions have continued to build between Iran and the U.S., the Nimitz is training with other nation’s military and navies, supplying support through the U.S. Navy air wing for Operation Inherent Resolve.
According to the U.S. Navy’s Fifth Fleet, based in Bahrain, the U.S. has held operations in the region for nearly 30 years. The previous aircraft carrier to have maneuvers there was the USS Abraham Lincoln in November of 2019.
